Officials from Beijing Women’s Federation (BWF) received Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Under-Secretary-General of the UN and Executive Director of the UN Women, who headed a five-person delegation to the capital, on December 14, 2018.

The delegation made the visit to learn about local women-run high-tech enterprises and business startups.

BWF vice-president Zhao Haiying welcomed the delegation on behalf of BWF. She talked with the delegates about the federation’s work in promoting women’s engagement in entrepreneurship and innovation, along with the favorable policies and other means of assistance introduced by local government to relevant projects.
Cheng Jing, general-manager of the Intelligent Manufacturing (IM) Way in Beijing’s high-tech business hub Zhongguancun Science Park, who is also a recipient of the National March 8th Red-Banner Holder title, gave a brief introduction to the delegation about the area.

Meanwhile, the delegation visited several enterprises and learned about the role played by women in high-tech businesses and startups.

The delegation also toured to a local Women’s Home activity center, where an official from Dongsheng Township Women’s Federation briefed them about the center’s main functions and major activities to enrich the lives of women.

For her part, Mlambo-Ngcuka said she had been greatly inspired during the visit.

For example, Chinese women have played an important role in the high-tech sector and women-oriented organizations in the country have provided good services and strong support.

Zhao explained that in accordance with the capital's development orientation and the actual needs of women, BWF has intensified its practical efforts, such as holding a global women's technology contest, to assist women in their innovation and entrepreneurship.

Zhao continued that BWF hopes to strengthen its communication with foreign counterparts, under the guidance of UN Women, in the promotion of women’s innovation and entrepreneurship and work together to help them make higher achievements in the field of scientific and technological innovation.

Those in attendance at the event included Mohamed Nassiri, director of the UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific; Mariah Guimarães, a commissioner for strategic partnership in the regional office; and, Yang Ruikan, program coordinator of the UN Women China.
