Beijing Women’s Federation and Beijing Open University (BOU) held an event on September 8 to launch their jointly-developed Lifelong Learning Platform for Capital Women, set to provide continuing education for those female citizens living in the city.

Jiao Yang, vice-president and member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), attended the opening ceremony and officially launched the scheme.

Beijing Women’s Federation and Beijing Open University co-developed the Lifelong Learning Platform for Capital Women against the background of making Beijing a “learning city”. The platform will contribute towards improving the comprehensive quality of life for women in Beijing in an all-round way and speed up local women’s development. The platform will also bring open, flexible and resourceful lifelong learning services to all women in capital.

The platform provides diversified learning services with a focus on lifelong training and skills. It is targeted to help individuals realize their ambitions and help them live a more colorful life. After three years of building its curriculum, the platform includes subjects such as Women and Development, Women and Rights, Women and Family, Women and Culture, Women and Health, and Women and Emotion.

Well-known experts were invited to assist organizers to analyze current events and provide a social focus. A series of animations, as well as expert interviews, lectures and streaming media have since been developed. In total, 220 courses were built in the first phase. Some 110 more will be added, as well as a mobile app in the second phase.

These courses will provide needed education services which cover career, life, development and other areas for women at all ages, all levels and across all areas of the city.

The platform has four features. Firstly it is open and set up to provide widespread benefits. It is funded by the government and provides learning content and services for all women. Secondly, it gathers quality education resources from the whole society to serve women’s learning. Thirdly, it is cooperative. Beijing Women’s Federation and BOU co-developed the platform using their own distinctive advantages, and achieved an interconnection with Jing Xue Wang, the existing network of lifelong learning for Beijing citizens.

In the next phase, Beijing Women’s Federation and Beijing Open University will continue to cooperate on perfecting the platform, enlarging curriculum development and exploring learning via mobile apps in order to constantly meet the diverse needs of women. An open, compatible and sharing system for women’s lifelong learning will be built to improve women's career planning, enhance women’s quality of life, and guide women to pay attention to continued learning, thus condensing the forces of the group for the capital's further development.

Following a recent trial of the platform, several representatives shared their experiences of the pilot program at the launch.

Around 100 people attended the event, including those from the Publicity Department of the ACWF, Beijing Municipal Education Commission and Beijing Women's Federation, as well as the representatives of District Women's Federations and BOU.

Also present at the event were: Li Biyou, vice secretary-general of Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC (the Communist Party of China); Ma Lanxia, president of Beijing Women's Federation; Huang Kan, committee member of Beijing Municipal Education Commission; Shen Yubao, secretary of CPC Committee of BOU; and, Huang Xiankai, president of BOU.
