Ruan Xiangyan is Chief Specialist of the Department of Endocrinology at Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Capital Medical University. She has devoted more than 30 years to the field of obstetrics and gynecology and has achieved major breakthroughs in the protection of female fertility.

Addressing the challenge that chemotherapy and radiotherapy can lead to ovarian failure in patients, she led her team in overcoming technical barriers and pioneering innovative solutions. Her team was the first in China to carry out ovarian tissue cryopreservation and transplantation. Their work achieved three historic firsts in the country’s reproductive medicine: the first successful transplantation of cryopreserved ovarian tissue, the first natural pregnancy following such a transplantation, and the birth of the first healthy baby after the procedure.

Today, these advances help safeguard the fertility and lifelong health of at least one million children and young women each year.
