The 13th National Women's Congress (NWC) is set to open in Beijing on October 23. A 65-person delegation from the capital city will attend the women’s congress, during which they will discuss over major issues concerning women's affairs and display the positive image of outstanding women in Beijing in the new era.

 

Li Haili, a professor and chief physician of the Ophthalmological Department of Peking University First Hospital

Li Haili is a veteran medical worker who has witnessed China's medical reforms and the country's endeavors to make healthcare affordable by the people in the past three decades. She has worked on the front line of saving lives and teaching and research work. She founded a department of refractive surgery in Peking University First Hospital, and has performed over 10,000 surgeries for patients with cataract, shortsightedness and other problems. She has worked with other ophthalmological experts to carry out science popularization activities on myopia prevention and control among children and eye-related diseases among the elderly, and performed nearly 2,000 cataract surgeries for people in remote areas and those with physical disabilities for free.

During the past decades, over 50 research papers of her have been published in domestic and foreign journals, and she has compiled dozens of medical books. Since she joined the China National Democratic Construction Association, she has submitted more than 30 proposals as a deputy to the Beijing Municipal People's Congress. She has taken part in earthquake relief and donated funds and supplies to college students and mothers in need. She headed a group of medical experts to hold free medical checks-up for people in rural areas of Guizhou and Hebei provinces.
