Around 70 women and children from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China are taking part in a series of social exchange events with professionals and families in Beijing from August 2.

The social exchange is designed to promote mutual understanding and help both sides benefit from their respective experience, skills and situation.

The visitors all come from the Hetian region and the 14th Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. At the launch, they were presented with over 1,400 sweaters which were donated by women in the capital to be taken for distribution back home.

In the next few days, together with their hosts, the Xinjiang residents will tour scenic spots such as Tian'anmen Square, the National Museum and the Great Wall. They will also join in colorful events including performances, reading sessions and traditional art classes.

Beijing Women's Federation first initiated the exchange scheme in 2014. Since then, officials have assigned multiple teams of legal experts, entrepreneurship tutors and caring mothers to help disadvantaged women and children in Xinjiang.

Both sides of the exchange campaign have been drawing upon each other's merits while seeking common development and ever-improving relationships.

Zhou Zhijun, vice-president of Beijing Women's Federation, welcomed the visiting group at the opening ceremony. She hoped that women in Beijing and Xinjiang will get a better understanding of each other through the innovative scheme.

Tusong'ayi Yidiresi, a woman official in the visiting delegation, delivered a speech at the opening event.

Officials from the Beijing Office for Economic Support and Cooperation also attended the ceremony.
