The China Children and Teenagers' Foundation (CCTF), Beijing Women's Federation (BWF), the Capital Civilization Office and Beijing Volunteer Federation, jointly launched a public welfare project on March 5 to encourage residents to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle.

The project involves placing special collection boxes in local communities where people can donate their old or unwanted clothes. Staff will regularly recycle and sort the contents.

For items of good quality, they will be donated to impoverished children after being cleaned and disinfected. The rest of the clothes will be processed and made into new products.

During the launch, Zhao Lijun, vice-president of the federation, noted out in her speech that Beijing will select around 80 communities from four districts including Dongcheng, Chaoyang, Tongzhou and Daxing as experimental units to place the collection boxes.

Meanwhile, Zhao highlighted the importance of establishing voluntary family groups in carrying out such activities concerning environmental protection in communities. Furthermore, in her speech, Zhao said the project will create job opportunities for poverty-stricken women and help them increase their incomes.

Zhao also hoped that the scheme will call on more people to serve as volunteers and positively participate in public welfare events.

At the ceremony, Zhu Xisheng, secretary-general of the CCTF, emphasized that the scheme is designed to implement the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's latest developmental idea, integrating various social resources and advocating everyone to get involved in charity environmental protection.

Zhu also expressed hope that Beijing would play a leading role in advancing the development of the country's women and children; building harmonious and pioneering communities; and, carrying forward the construction of an ecological civilized society.

Cai Jing, a representative of the national Most Beautiful Family campaign prize-winners, read "The Environmental Protection Service Proposal" at the ceremony, promoting a green and low-carbon lifestyle.

Others at the launch of the project included Deng Li, vice-president and member of the Secretariat of the ACWF; Ma Lanxia, president and secretary of the Party leadership group of the BWF; Wu Guiying, secretary of the Party committee of the Chaoyang District; and, Wang Hongtao, deputy-secretary of the China Communist Youth League.

After the opening ceremony, senior officials and attendees jointly donated their old clothes and inspected new products made from throw-away items.
Accordingly, the project will be firstly conducted in north China's Tianjin Municipality, east China's Jiangsu Province and northeast China's Heilongjiang Province as well as Beijing.
