Municipal officials visited demonstration bases in Beijing's Huairou district on March 7 to assess a nationwide rural women's development activity scheme under the banner of Double Learning and Double Emulation.

The visit was timed just in advance of International Women's Day on March 8. Officials taking part included Zhao Genwu, deputy secretary-general of Beijing Municipal Government; Sun Wenkai, director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Rural Affairs; and the district mayor, Chang Wei.

On behalf of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Beijing Municipal Committee and Beijing Municipal Government, the visitors extended special greetings to leaders and staff at the bases.

The officials inspected the construction of a greenhouse at a local eco-complex which is a national model base for the Women Shaking off Poverty campaign launched by the All-China Women's Federation.

Lin Keqing, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and leader of Beijing Coordination Group for Double Learning and Double Emulation Competitions, asked about the production and operating conditions and spoke highly of the site's contribution.

The base has helped some 550 rural women and 45 low-income households to achieve employment and higher income annually, according to officials.

In particular, he learned about a scheme for selling cheap mushroom-growing logs to farmers and purchasing back the produce at an above market value price. He praised the "practical effects on assisting employment and entrepreneurship of low-income women in surrounding areas."

Then, visiting officials held the 2017 Double Learning and Double Emulation work conference at the base.

Ma Lanxia, president and secretary of the Party leadership group of Beijing Women's Federation and deputy leader of the coordination group, gave a summary of their work in 2016 regarding the project and its role in helping rural women develop production, improve living conditions, find jobs and start businesses.

Ma also introduced their work tasks in 2017 from six aspects, including strengthening publicity, enhancing technical training and advancing regional cooperation.

Later, officials gave speeches on how to provide better services to grassroots women.

During the conference, Lin urged local coordination groups at all levels and grassroots women's federations to give necessary support in policy-making and resource allocation; stay close to the grassroots women to learn their real needs; and, solve problems and difficulties confronting women in a timely manner.

Over 100 people including members from local municipal and district-level coordination groups attended the event.

Representatives receive holiday gifts during the meeting.
