Women's federations in north China's Beijing, Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province held an activity on August 15 to promote cross-region collaboration on poverty-relief initiatives.

The event, which took place in the county of Zhangbei, near Zhangjiakou City in Hebei, was also an opportunity to exchange folk culture traditions and tourism development efforts.

Hebei Women's Federation aimed to deepen the implementation of a national strategy of coordinated development in the three places; and, act in accordance with President Xi Jinping's keynote remarks that highlight the role of Hebei in accelerating its development by connecting and serving the capital and the municipality.

Also, the initiative was set to follow the requirements of a provincial symposium which spotlighted shaking off abject poverty among counties.

Many donations to Hebei were presented during the activity, organizers said.

In specific, Gaitianli Pharmaceutical Company donated medical products worth 6.96 million yuan (U.S.$ 1.03 million) to Hebei Women's Federation.

The Hebei branch of insurance company China Life provided 20,000 impoverished women with insurance premiums worth a total of 200,000 yuan (U.S.$ 29,850). This can further cover insured applicants' medical expenses up to 200 million yuan (U.S.$ 29.85 million) in terms of treatments for cervical and breast cancer. The branch also signed a collaborative deal with Hebei Women's Federation.

The provincial federation donated 4.5 million yuan (U.S.$ 676,121) via the Spring Bud Program and Mothers' Eyesight Recovery Project to Zhangjiakou Women's Federation.

Donated goods and money will be used to help women from counties stricken by abject poverty.

Meanwhile, federations in Beijing and Tianjin signed direct assistance deals with specific organizations in Hebei.

For example, the women's federation of Xicheng District of Beijing joined hands with the federation in Zhangbei County; Chaoyang District joined with Kangbao County; Wuqing District of Tianjin joined with Weichang County; and Jinnan District joined with Longhua County.

Heibei Women's Federation launched a database platform on handicrafts and tourism, after conducting research among 30 selected places in the first round.

The federation aims to promote the local production and sale of handmade tourist souvenirs in rational marketing channels with the help of the Internet.

Women can shake off poverty through family-run handicrafts workshops, said an official.

Jia Yuying, president of Hebei Women's Federation, urged organizations in three places to work under enhanced leadership; make use of organizational strength in connecting and uniting women; highlight their work focus; and, serve the overall situation of coordinated development in terms of regional cooperation, fund-sharing approaches and targeted assistance.

Jia highlighted three issues – cooperation, the inner motivation of women, and the grasp of opportunities – and their importance in carrying out poverty-relief initiatives across the province.

Women's coordinated development in these three areas can help them explore new approaches featuring industrial, economic and trade cooperation, environmental protection, labor export and the exchange of talents.

Achievements that have been realized in recent two years include the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Women's Coordinated Development and Cooperation Framework Plan, promotional initiatives on women's startups and investment schemes, online chat groups for female start-up entrepreneurs, and exchanges about women-related tourism in villages.

As part of the initiative, over 230 leading businesswomen have so far visited 31 demonstration bases relating to village tourism, leisure agriculture and handicrafts production. They helped local residents implement 260 assistive schemes.

After the event, officials exchanged opinions during visits to folk culture-featured tourist sites and modern agricultural bases run by female entrepreneurs.
