BWF, Peking University Holds Women and Olympics-themed Activity

To strengthen solidarity and cooperation in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic, leverage the unique role of Beijing as the first city in Olympics history that will host both the Olympic summer and winter games, and as the host of the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women (held in 1995), supported by the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Beijing Women's Federation (BWF) and Peking University held an activity at the China Nation Convention Center on July 9.

 

 

More than 200 people, including experts and scholars from Chinese and international sports circles, representatives from government departments and enterprises, women's representatives from all walks of life in Beijing and Olympic champions attended the event themed "consensus and action."

Zhang Yajun, Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group and President of BWF, and An Yufeng, Deputy Secretary of the Party committee of Peking University, gave speeches at the event. Zhang said that the Olympic games is not only the evolutionary history of competitive sports, but also a chronicle of the progress in gender equality, witnessing and advancing the historical process of women's liberation.

 

Zhang hoped that through the event the values of women's participation, dedication, and enjoyment of the Olympics will be strengthened, and the charm and spiritual power of the Beijing Winter Olympics will be enriched and deepened.

An hoped that the activity would help deepen the public's understanding of the Olympic spirit, broaden the vision of women and sports-related issues, and further build consensus to promote the development of women and sports.

Xu Jicheng, director of the Media Operations Department of the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, gave a special report on the prospects of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and women's participation.

 

Xu shared the story behind the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, provided an update on the current progress of the preparations for the Olympics, and expressed his resolution and confidence in Beijing to successfully host this sport event.

 

He also specifically explained the concept and principles of gender equality in the Olympic Charter and pointed out that promoting gender equality in the Olympics is a comprehensive win-win for both men and women, which will also influence the future of the Olympic Games profoundly in a long run.

In the keynote speech session, Professor Dong Jinxia of Peking University, Zheng Xiaoying, an academician of The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and Dean of the APEC Health Science Academy of Peking University, Dou Guanglu, Deputy Director of the TeamMinus Studio of the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tsinghua University, and Professor Susan Brownell, Dean of the Department of Anthropology and Foreign Languages of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, discussed the role of women in the Olympics from four perspectives  history, health, architecture, and volunteer service.

 

Dong reviewed the century-long journey of women since they first participated in the Olympic Games in 1900, showing how women, from marginal and disadvantaged roles, have become important participants and promoters of the Olympics.

 

Zheng emphasized that health is one of the fundamental pursuits of the Olympic spirit. The Olympics is an important opportunity to draw attention to and promote women's health. She hoped the 2022 Winter Olympics will draw more attention to women's health.

 

Dou shared her understanding of a green Olympics from the perspective of a female architect, combined with her personal experience of participating in the design of the Shougang Ski Jumping Platform and other supporting projects for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, showing how the Olympic architecture integrates the environmental, economic and social factors to achieve sustainable development.

 

Brownell shared the Olympic volunteer service from the perspective of women via video link. Through a comparative study of Olympic volunteers in the United States, China, and South Korea, she summarized the roles and characteristics of women Olympic volunteers at different stages, and gave her advice on the management, training and self-development of women's participation in volunteer services for Olympics in the future.
