Beijing Launches Program to Cultivate Women Pioneers in Science, Technology

The Capital Association of Women Professors (CAWP) held a ceremony to launch a program to cultivate leading women scientific and technological workers and held a youth sci-tech innovation forum on January 8. Tan Hong, Vice-President of the Beijing Womens Federation (BWF), Bao Liying, deputy secretary of the Party committee of the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) and cadres from the education commission of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee attended the events. Members of the board of directors and supervisors of CAWP attended online.

He Haiyan, President of the CAWP, said the program is an important measure to implement the Women in Scientific and Technological Innovation Action: Beijing Action, and the program will train and select women pioneers and leaders in scientific and technological innovation among doctoral candidates.

 

Through pair-up training, annual recommendations and selection, the program will invite instructors, who are women academicians and/or scholars supported by Chang Jiang Scholars Program and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, to help women pioneers deepen their expertise and improve their skills in communication, leadership and decision-making.

 

During the event, leaders and guests presented letters of appointment to the first group of 13 instructors and 13 members of the pioneers' team.

Yan Zhijun, Party Secretary of the School of Management and Economics for BIT, fully affirmed CAWP's important role in fostering outstanding young people and strengthening the development of young sci-tech pioneers' groups. He also pointed out the importance of building a platform for innovation targeted at women students.

 

Bao said that through the program, a group of outstanding young women engaged in science and technology can be guided to have an international vision and the ability to conduct cross-field, inter-disciplinary and cross-team work. They will inherit the spirit of women scientists, be committed to innovation, contribute to tackling problems in core technological research that hinder the country's development.

 

Tan praised CAWP's efforts in implementing the Women in Scientific and Technological Innovation Action: Beijing Action. She stressed that the new program is a practice to implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's instruction for building a leading country in science and technology through lengthy struggle and strenuous effort from generation to generation. She added that the program presents opportunities for young women scientific and technological workers' all-around development. By giving play to the leading role of outstanding scientists, it will surely lead youngsters to strengthen their belief in serving the country, remain focused and take a steadfast path on their academic career.

 

On behalf of the instructors of the program, Su Donglin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, expressed her hope that young scientific and technological workers can continue to carry forward the tradition of being honest and doing things in a down-to-earth manner. Su encouraged the younger generation to keep in mind former Premier Zhou Enlai's requirements to be thoughtful and reliable and make more contributions to the country.

 

Zhang Yingying, a representative of the women sci-tech pioneers' team, said they will strive to play a leading role in innovation, overcoming difficulties and writing new chapters.

 

During the forum, Zhuo Shaohua from Tsinghua University, Ruan Wenxian from Peking University, Li Zhiqi from Beijing Jiaotong University, and Wang Qingyu from Peking Union Medical College shared their personal stories, their team's characteristic achievements and experience in overcoming difficulties.
