Event Promotes Family-oriented Exchanges Across the Straits

An event on the theme of “Marriage and Life” was held in Beijing on July 22 to highlight family harmony and deep attachment among compatriots across the Taiwan Straits. The event was organized by the Beijing Women's Federation (BWF) and the Beijing Women's Association for Hong Kong, Macao & Taiwan Compatriots and Overseas Chinese. It was part of the Cross-Straits Youth Summit, which was held from July 21-22 in Beijing.

Noting that families are basic social units of a country and that a country is composed of millions of families, Lin Yi, Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), said that the purpose for launching the Family Happiness and Well-being Campaign and the Looking for the Most Beautiful Family campaign is to promote social harmony through building harmonious families. Lin said that people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits are one family with blood bond of kinship and affection. By sharing touching stories of families across the Straits, the event will help pass down fine family traditions, foster strong patriotism and strengthen people’s identity of peaceful reunification. She called on young people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits to integrate themselves into the country's overall development, and contribute to the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations.

Wang Hong, Vice-Chairperson of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said that the capital city has attached great importance to the work on family, promoted the coordinated development between the work on women and children and economic and social growth, and exerted full support to family-oriented cultural and ethical progress in the new era. She hoped that young people across the Straits will strengthen contact and exchanges and share the opportunities brought about by economic and social development. She hoped that with fine traditional culture as the root, families on both sides of the Taiwan Straits will become more closely connected and will live happy lives. She expected that young people across the Straits will work together for peaceful development and the realization of national rejuvenation.

Highlighting that harmony in a family brings success in everything, the event was composed of four chapters, during which touching stories of families across the Taiwan Straits were shared through videos on-stage interviews and art performances. The organizers intended to guide young people from both sides of the Straits to learn the truth of happiness and strengthen the bond with their families.

In the chapter truth of happiness, the video Happy Life in My Eyes, which presented interviews with people from walks of life in Beijing and Taiwan, reflected ordinary peoples pursuit for happiness.

 

In another chapter, children of two couples director Yu-Chen Hsieh and his wife Zhang Jinfeng and businesswoman Cai Xueni and her husband Zhao Guangying share their parents’ love stories, showing the importance of good family traditions for maintaining happiness.

During the on-stage interviews, two cross-Straits couples told their stories, reflecting the significance of mutual understanding in a big family and the truth that people on the both sides of the Straits belong to one and the same family.

Hei Jiahong, daughter of tenor Hei Haitao and Hong Linghui, and a student of the couple performed two songs to show the love story of the couple. A poem-recitation performance given by Taiwan students in Beijing embodied their expectation for a family reunion.

A campaign to look for the most beautiful families across the Taiwan Straits was launched on the sidelines of the event.

 

Those in attendance of the event included Huo Guangfeng, head of the Taiwan Work Office of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC); Song Wei, first-level inspector of the ACWF Liaison Department; Fu Chuan, Vice-Chairperson of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang (RCCK); Xian Haizhen, Vice-President of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League; and officials from Dongcheng, Haidian, Fangshan and Changping districts in Beijing.
