The year 2023 marks the 60th anniversary since revolutionaries of the older generation, including Mao Zedong, wrote inscriptions for comrade Lei Feng, a late ordinary soldier and a household icon in China celebrated for selflessly helping others. Over the past six decades, the Lei Feng spirit has nurtured the minds of Chinese people from generation to generation. Speaking in an important instruction on further carrying out the activities of learning from Lei Feng, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for efforts to promote such activities throughout society, thus creating a mighty force for building a modern socialist country in all respects and advancing national rejuvenation on all fronts.

To carry forward the volunteer spirit of dedication, friendship, mutual help and progress, and strengthen the brand building of women volunteer services, Beijing Women's Federation (BWF) has made a decision to launch a month-long campaign on learning from Lei Feng and to organize womens volunteer service activities in March.

A ceremony was held at a community in Shunyi District of the capital city on March 5, to mark the opening of the month-long campaign on learning from Lei Feng, conducting womens volunteer services and the unveiling of sunshine stations for womens volunteer services. The event was organized by BWF, the Beijing municipal office for cultural and ethical progress, and the Beijing Volunteer Service Federation.

The ceremony brought together Wang Xiujiang, deputy director-general of the Publicity Department of the All-China Women's Federation; Chen Yanping, member of the Leading Party Group and vice-president of the BWF; Li Jian, deputy secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, vice-chairperson and secretary-general of the Beijing Volunteer Service Federation; and Wang Hu, director of the cultural-ethical advancement center of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Beijing Municipal Committee.

In her speech, Chen announced a name list of sunshine stations for womens volunteer services to be built and the inauguration of 23 such service stations across 16 districts in the capital city. She added that BWF has launched an alliance of sunshine volunteer services to strengthen the integration of various professional service resources on science and technology popularization, family education, dispute mediation and healthcare. The alliance will offer professional support to the sunshine stations and provide the elderly, children and their families with high-quality and all-round services. So far, the alliance has drawn the application of 40 volunteer service teams. Representatives from these groups were presented with commemorative certificates at the ceremony.

During the ceremony, representatives of local volunteers recited an article themed on passing down the Lei Feng spirit and expanding womens volunteer services. The presentation showcased a positive image of female volunteers and their families, and made a call to all women and their families to closely follow the Lei Feng spirit in the new era and take part in volunteer services.

A wide range of activities will be held during the month-long womens volunteer services campaign. For instance, the capital city is expected to organize female volunteers to undertake publicity and education activities on family education and traditions, laws and rules, science and technology popularization, and give assistance to disadvantaged people.

The capital city will grasp the opportunities of the campaign to hold womens volunteer services activities on a regular basis and expand the influence of womens volunteer services.
