Zhang Yajun (C) and Huang Shu (2nd, R), Head of the Division of American and Oceanian Affairs of the Liaison Department of the All-China Women's Federation, grant the certificates and trophy to the winners of "the most beautiful families in the capital city" for 2019.

The Beijing Women's Federation (BWF) and the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality on May 18 celebrated the annual International Day of Families at the Shougang Park, where the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics organizing committee is located.

This year's celebration had a new theme of promoting the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and invited more than 300 people from around 20 families, ranging from foreign diplomats and experts to winners of the honorary titles of "the most beautiful families in the capital city" and "the national most beautiful families".

Zhang Yajun, Secretary of the Leading Party Group of the BWF, Zhao Haiying, BWF's Vice President, Wang Feng, Full-time Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Organizing Committee for the Beijing Winter Olympics, Tang Xing’an, Head of the Organization Department and Member of the Standing Committee of Shijingshan District Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and representatives from the hosts and organizers of the event attended.

Beijing is hosting a group of grand events this summer. In addition to the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, the Beijing World Horticultural Exposition and the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations will draw people from all over the world to cultivate exchanges and seek solutions that promote a low-carbon lifestyle.

These events draw all members of the world closer and further enhance their friendship.

As a calling card of the BWF, the annual celebration of the International Day of Families offers an opportunity to take part in the exchange activities between Chinese and foreign families.

Zhang pointed out the significance of family-oriented communication, saying that "Celebrations for the International Day of Families have been held for nine consecutive years, drawing nearly 10,000 people from over 60 countries so far."

She noted that family-oriented communication can go beyond national boundaries, races and languages, and become the carrier of communication and mutual learning between different civilizations.

Syrian ambassador to China Imad Moustapha conveyed a congratulatory message to the event.

The International Day of Families was launched by the United Nations to enhance awareness of family issues and promote family harmony, happiness and progress.

This year it focuses on "Families and Climate Action: Focus on Sustainable Development Goals 13".

The BWF invited Chinese and foreign families to experience winter sports at Shougang Park, hoping to draw more international attention to climate change and its influence on the globe and winter sports.

Gao Fei, one of the winners of "the most beautiful families in the capital city" for 2019, showed great enthusiasm for ice and snow sports after experiencing a winter game at the event.

She said the event is "extraordinarily significant", adding that every minor effort counts for the protection of Earth's ecology and each family should contribute to it with practical actions.

At the opening of the celebration, Zhang and Huang Shu, Head of the Division of American and Oceanian Affairs of the Liaison Department of the All-China Women's Federation, awarded the certificates and trophy to Ouyang Baimei and Gao Fei families, both winners of "the most beautiful families in the capital city" for 2019.

Another winner of the honorary title, a family from Iran, was also invited to the celebration. The daughter of the family participated in a short musical video for the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations that began in Beijing on May 15.

The BWF has been actively promoting international exchange and friendship through women, children and families and facilitating the city's construction as a global exchange center.

Efforts have been made to that end through international youth voluntary events, She Loves Tech women's entrepreneurship contest, and setting up the special fund Mulan Power to support exchanges.

Zhang also called for more attention to be paid to women's development, family construction, and children's growth.

At the event, a troupe of artistic roller skating children from Shijingshan Kindergarten performed for the audience of families. Participants of the event also tried winter sports and checked out the Beijing "Smart Lady" handicrafts, all broadcast through the Facebook account of Guangming Online.

In addition, the celebration includes a week-long exhibition featuring families and sports, international exchanges between Chinese and foreign families, and best wishes for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
