Li Ying, a handicraft master in Beijing, demonstrated her paper and fabric art making skills to the world from her studio in Changping District, Beijing on August 28, as part of a live-streaming series titled "Experience Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage with Smart Lady", held by Guangming Daily on its official Facebook account.

A host played the role of Li's translator and together they broadcast the handicraft production process, in real time and in Chinese and English. Li's live show received nearly 10,000 likes and attracted 320,000 global viewers.

During the live-streaming, Li explained that due to the impact of COVID-19, her studio had moved its class online using video links, and also offered paper and fabric art courses that turn waste into art. The courses taught how to use waste newspapers to make boxes and flowers, use old clothes to make dolls, etc, inspiring everyone to create beauty with their hands, and advocating the concept of a green life.

Li is director of the Beijing Smart Lady Handicrafts Development Association and vice-president of Changping District's Smart Lady Association. Li's studio has become a platform to promote women's employment, offering nearly 100 courses in nine categories including flower art, dolls, crocheting, leather art, soft pottery, and tie dyeing. She has won the honor of Beijing March 8th Red-Banner Medal.

Li said that she will never forget the time she participated in the Arab-China Women's Forum as a representative of the handicraft industry in 2015. Seeing the love of foreign friends for her handicrafts made Li realize the important role played by art in promoting exchanges and understanding. This year Li has been preparing for giving online courses to foreign women.

The live-streaming series is aimed at telling the wonderful stories of Beijing women to the world through the official Facebook account of Guangming Daily. So far, there has been 23 episodes with more than 9.9 million global views.
